What in the world is wrong with us in Chicago? How many lives must be lost before we mobilize to end the insane carnage in our streets? A thousand deaths a year? Two thousand?
A year ago, I unsuccessfully ran for Cook County state's attorney because I was fed up with our complacency toward gun violence. I told voters that elected officials, fearful that bold action would threaten their re-election, paid lip service to the problem and precious little else.
Sadly, nothing has changed.
