Perry plant down for maintenance Nuclear energy

Perry — FirstEnergy shut down the Perry nuclear power plant over the weekend for refueling and routine maintenance.

Contractors will replace 280, or about a third, of the reactor’s 748 fuel rod assemblies.

Maintenance includes the replacement of one of two 115-ton transformers that shuttle power to the plant from the nearby high-volt-age grid when the reactor is idle. The company replaced a twin to this transformer in 2015.
