Budget must rein in spending, warns Turnbull

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has signalled fresh spending cuts in the May budget after warning that the trajectory of the Coalition's budget is still not robust enough to create a significant fiscal buffer against any major economic downturn or market collapse.

"Under the Coalition, even after the budget returns to balance - in the absence of further spending restraint - budget surpluses are projected to remain less than 1 per cent of GDP. That's not a big buffer," he said.
