After Trump’s Phone Call to Philippines Leader, China’s President Calls Him

BEIJING — President Xi Jinping of China spoke on Wednesday with the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, about North Korea and other issues, part of an effort by the Chinese to woo a longtime American ally.

The phone call came a few days after President Trump telephoned Mr. Duterte and invited him to visit the White House.
