''Playing Poker With Veterans,'' by Bruce Holbert (Sunday Review, Feb. 26), confirmed my own sense of what it is to be a veteran.
I was often asked what I thought about the political debates surrounding the war when I was in Vietnam. I tried to explain that being in a war zone compelled one to focus on immediate, practical concerns -- so much so that politics became abstract to the point of irrelevance.
